DEEP PURPLE To Play 15-Minute Set At LIVE 8
July 2, 2005DEEP PURPLE bassist Roger Glover has spoken to The Stamford Advocate about the group's appearance at the Live 8 concert in Barrie, Ontario later today.
The show outside Toronto will be one of eight staged to raise awareness of poverty in Africa, in advance of next weekend's G8 summit, when the leaders of the world's eight wealthiest nations meet in Scotland.
Glover said DEEP PURPLE was honored to be invited to perform by Bob Geldof, who is organizing the worldwide day of concerts.
"They're not asking for money, just raising awareness, and I think that's a really bold move," Glover said.
"There aren't many classic hard-rock bands on the bill," Glover added. "In fact, we might be the only one they asked."
The schedule will be hectic and tiring, but Glover said the Live 8 cause is worth it.
"Something this big, it's an honor to be chosen. You'd be churlish to turn it down," he said. "It's not a charity, but a way to promote a cause. A lot of us see a lot of imbalance in the world, and a lot of times you feel helpless to do anything about it."
The band will be held to a strict 15-minute set, which is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
"The logistics of it are horrendous," Glover said of the concert. "It's very tightly organized."
